The Punjab CM Laptop Scheme is set for a massive scale-up as the provincial government evaluates two expansion models to meet overwhelming student demand. With over 143,000 applications already submitted, officials are considering a budget increase of up to Rs. 54 billion to ensure more merit-based candidates receive high-end laptops for their academic pursuits.
Strategic Expansion of the Punjab CM Laptop Scheme
To address the rising influx of applicants, the Punjab government is currently reviewing two distinct frameworks for the next phase of the rollout. These proposals aim to significantly bridge the gap between the current supply and the growing needs of the student body.
The Two Proposed Models
- 100% Expansion Model: A recommendation to double the program’s reach, increasing the budget to Rs. 54 billion. This would allow 220,000 students to receive devices.
- 50% Expansion Model: An alternative plan with a Rs. 40 billion price tag, targeting a total of 165,000 students.
Currently, the program operates on a Rs. 27 billion budget, with 35,000 laptops already distributed to successful candidates during the initial rollout.
Critical Deadline Extension for Phase 2
In a move to accommodate more learners, the Higher Education Department (HED) has officially extended the registration window. Students across the province now have additional time to finalize their profiles and meet the merit criteria.
- New Deadline: March 20, 2026
- Application Method: Strictly via the official Punjab student portal.
- Total Applications Received: 143,000+ and counting.
The final decision regarding which expansion model to implement rests with the Chief Minister’s office, following a fiscal review by the finance department.
